Most services provided by your GP are covered by the NHS and are free of charge. However, some requests fall outside NHS services, and for these we charge a fee.
What are non-NHS services?
Non-NHS services are work that GPs are not contractually required to provide under the NHS. These are often requested by patients, employers, insurance companies, or other organisations.
Examples include:
- Medical reports or letters for employers, schools, or housing
- Completion of insurance or legal forms
- Fitness to travel or fitness to participate in activities
- Private sick notes or certificates not covered by NHS rules
- Medical examinations for driving, work, or insurance purposes
Why do we charge fees?
The NHS does not fund this work. As such:
- GPs complete these tasks outside of NHS time
- Fees reflect the time, responsibility, and administrative costs involved
Are we obliged to provide these services?
No. GP practices are not required to carry out non-NHS work, but we aim to help where possible.
