Non-NHS Services and Fees

Non-NHS Services and Fees

Most services provided by your GP are covered by the NHS and are free of charge. However, some requests fall outside NHS services, and for these we charge a fee.

What are non-NHS services?

Non-NHS services are work that GPs are not contractually required to provide under the NHS. These are often requested by patients, employers, insurance companies, or other organisations.

Examples include:

  • Medical reports or letters for employers, schools, or housing
  • Completion of insurance or legal forms
  • Fitness to travel or fitness to participate in activities
  • Private sick notes or certificates not covered by NHS rules
  • Medical examinations for driving, work, or insurance purposes

Why do we charge fees?

The NHS does not fund this work. As such:

  • GPs complete these tasks outside of NHS time
  • Fees reflect the time, responsibility, and administrative costs involved

Are we obliged to provide these services?

No. GP practices are not required to carry out non-NHS work, but we aim to help where possible.

Fees

  • Fees vary depending on the type and complexity of the request
  • A fee list is available here

Timing

  • Non-NHS work is completed alongside NHS duties; please allow up to 21 days for completion.

Important information

  • Some requests may require a GP appointment or review of your medical records
  • We will let you know if we are unable to complete a request
